If you’re pregnant, you may be more afraid of telling your parents than of the pregnancy itself. Maybe you’re worried they’ll be angry. Maybe you’re afraid they’ll be disappointed or insist on deciding for you.

Whatever you’re expecting, remember this: the conversation doesn’t have to happen today, and you don’t have to enter into the conversation unprepared.

At Affirm Women’s Health, we offer no-cost, confidential pregnancy testing and ultrasounds to provide essential pregnancy details and help you think through what you want to say before you talk with your parents.

Start With the Truth

You don’t need to prepare a long explanation or have your future mapped out before talking to your parents. Start with the facts.

You could say something as simple as, “I took a pregnancy test, and it was positive. I’m scared, and I don’t know what to do.”

That tells your parents what happened without making promises or defending a decision you haven’t made. If they immediately start asking questions you can’t answer, it’s okay to say, “I’m still trying to figure that out.”

Their First Reaction Isn’t Always Their Final One

Parents often react emotionally at first. They may cry, get quiet, ask a hundred questions, or even get upset. That doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t support you once they’ve had time to process the news.

Generally, with time, thoughts and feelings can shift.

However, if you ever feel unsafe at home, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline for support, or dial 911 if in danger.

If You Disagree on What to Do

One of the biggest fears many teens have is that their parents will pressure them into a decision they don’t want to make. While your parents’ opinions matter, it’s okay to ask for time if you aren’t ready to decide.

Learning more about your pregnancy first can help you have a more informed conversation and explain why you want to consider all of your options before moving forward.
